Three Teenagers Hospitalized After Falling from Bus Window

Three teenagers fell from a double-decker bus in Ashton-in-Makerfield on January 7, 2024, after reportedly leaning against an emergency exit window during an emergency stop. The boys, aged 13 and 14, were transported to a local hospital, where they remain under observation, though their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Shortly before 16:00, emergency services, including an air ambulance, arrived on Bolton Road to assist the injured. According to a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police, the boys were leaning on the window when the bus made a sudden stop, resulting in their fall from the upper deck.

The bus involved in the incident was identified as the 950 service, and images from the scene suggest that a side window on the top deck was missing. In a statement, the police confirmed they are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the event.

The boys are students at nearby St Edmund Arrowsmith Catholic High School. Headteacher Mark Dumican addressed the situation in a letter to parents, which has been shared with local media. He expressed concern for the students and their families and confirmed that the school is providing support to those affected.

In his communication, Dumican emphasized, “Contrary to some reports, there are no life-threatening injuries, and all three boys have been assessed in hospital.” He also urged parents to remind their children about the importance of remaining seated while using the upper deck of buses.

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham commented on the incident, mentioning that it appeared to be associated with a disturbance on the bus’s upper deck. He stated, “It does sound like a serious incident. Our concern is with the young people and with their families.” Burnham clarified that the bus involved was not a Bee Network branded service.

In light of the incident, Vision Bus Company, the operator of the bus service, announced that they are conducting an investigation and are cooperating with police inquiries. They emphasized the importance of ensuring passenger safety and will work to uncover the details surrounding the fall.

As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on the well-being of the injured teenagers and their families.
