A woman known as “Catwoman” has been apprehended by police in São Paulo, Brazil, following a string of high-profile burglaries targeting luxury apartments. Identified as Paola Carita Gobel, the 31-year-old allegedly infiltrated upscale residential buildings by posing as a resident. Once inside, she reportedly stole cash, jewellery, designer watches, perfumes, and handbags.
This latest arrest marks the second time Gobel has faced law enforcement. In 2023, she was previously detained for allegedly stealing items valued at approximately £160,000 from a flat. Upon her release, she resumed her criminal activities, often changing her appearance—dying her hair from red to blonde—potentially to evade recognition.
On November 19, 2023, police intervened after a civil servant reported that his personal information had been used to rent an apartment. When officers raided the property, they discovered not only stolen goods but also illegal drugs and a vehicle in the garage. Gobel, along with three male accomplices, provided false rental agreements during the operation.
Details of the Arrest
During the police raid, the suspects attempted to conceal their actions. One individual smashed a mobile phone to prevent it from being seized. They arrived at the apartment complex with minimal belongings, including just a few bags and mattresses, and were seen covering their faces while filming other residences.
Investigators revealed that the group employed a tactic of entering and exiting the building one at a time, claiming to meet a partner inside. This strategy allowed them to distract the doorman, while one member waited in a vehicle to assist in transporting stolen items.
According to police reports, two of the detained individuals had prior arrests for serious offenses, including gang formation and burglary. All suspects are currently facing multiple charges, including criminal association, vehicle identification tampering, intentional receipt of stolen goods, trespass, and use of false identities.
The police chief stated that forensic analysis of the suspects’ phones is underway to determine if more individuals were involved in the burglaries. The investigation continues as authorities work to uncover the full extent of the group’s activities within the upscale residential areas of São Paulo.
