After climate activists glued themselves to a runway, one of Germany’s main regional airports has stopped all flights.
After the aforementioned “unauthorized people” gained access to Cologne-Bonn Airport on Wednesday morning, all flight operations were suspended while police moved in.
Various inbound flights have been redirected to local Düsseldorf, Hahn, Nuremberg and Hannover air terminals.
Many flights leaving Cologne Air terminal have been exposed to deferrals or retractions.
The Cologne-Bonn Airport has advised passengers to check the status of their flights before departing due to the possibility of “significant disruption.”
Last Generation claimed that five individuals had adhered themselves to the asphalt.
It published images of its members with their hands glued to the runway and claimed to be preventing air traffic at the airport. However, activists later reported that three of the five members had been removed by police.
Last Generation stated that it wanted the German government to work toward a global agreement to leave the oil, gas, and coal industries by 2030.
The gathering said “comparable quiet, respectful fights at air terminals” were anticipated Wednesday across Europe and North America.
At Helsinki Vantaa Airport, protesters were seen obstructing security gates in Finland.
On Wednesday morning, three activists broke the perimeter fence at Oslo’s main Gardermoen Airport.
The three were removed from the airport just over 30 minutes after they entered, according to Norwegian media.
After Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Berlin Brandenburg, Munich, and Frankfurt, Cologne-Bonn is Germany’s sixth busiest airport.
Six climate protesters stuck themselves to a runway in May, causing Munich Airport to be closed for two hours.
An airport spokesman stated that the disruption resulted in approximately 60 cancellations and 11 flights being diverted, in addition to eight arrests.
Nancy Faeser, the Interior Minister of Germany, stated that security measures at Munich Airport “would be reviewed” following the incident.
