Superhero 5K Hits Bennington, Boosts Teens 4 Change Program

UPDATE: The Superhero 5K event in Bennington, Vermont, took place on November 8, drawing approximately 170 participants to support the local Teens 4 Change program. As participants gathered at the Berkshire Family YMCA, the weather cleared, transforming a blustery morning into a perfect race day.

The excitement was palpable as runners and walkers lined up on Gage Street, eager to participate. Amid cheers, the announcer encouraged the crowd, highlighting the favorable conditions: “No snow, no rain, no wind. It’s an amazing PR type of day!” Just moments later, local singer Lauren Biasi performed the National Anthem, setting a festive tone for the race.

Just after the race commenced, a sudden gust of wind caught event tents, creating a brief moment of chaos. Participants, including families and dogs dressed as superheroes, quickly adapted, laughing and righting the tents as they prepared to run or walk.

“This is a really great community event,” said Heidi French, director of community relations for United Counseling Service (UCS). “About 75% of what we do is community-based service. This event means a lot to us and the community.” She emphasized the growing excitement of the event each year, with more participants eager to don capes and join in.

Emergency services were present to ensure safety, while volunteers from UCS, Head Start, and Teens 4 Change helped direct traffic along the route. The event catered to a wide range of ages, from six-year-old Rye Taibi-Burrell to 79-year-old Linda Putney.

Leading the race was 19-year-old Jayden Thomas, who crossed the finish line with an impressive time of 17:37.3. He was followed closely by 36-year-old Joseph Carter at 18:00.4 and 16-year-old Thomas Crowers at 18:04.3.

“This event is about bringing the community together,” said Lorna Mattern, CEO of UCS. “It promotes connection and health, emphasizing the link between physical and mental well-being.” Mattern highlighted that all proceeds from the race would support Teens 4 Change, an organization empowering local youth through volunteer opportunities and leadership development.

As the event unfolded, members of Teens 4 Change were seen actively directing traffic and cheering on participants, showcasing their commitment to giving back to the community. Mattern expressed pride in the young volunteers, stating, “They’re out there working, giving back, and supporting the community.”

The Superhero 5K was made possible through generous sponsorships from local businesses, including the Bennington Banner, Manchester Journal, and Taconic Music. Hanafords donated snacks for the participants, ensuring that everyone felt appreciated and energized.

As the day concluded, the sense of community was stronger than ever. The Superhero 5K not only promoted fitness but also fostered connections among residents, proving that even amidst challenges, community spirit prevails.
