Nairn Beach Earns ‘Excellent’ Rating for Clean Water Quality

UPDATE: Nairn Beach has just been awarded an ‘excellent’ rating for its water quality, confirming its status as a top destination for swimmers and water sports enthusiasts in Scotland. This recognition comes from the latest bathing water classifications released by the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

The report reveals that an impressive 82 percent of Scotland’s designated bathing waters have achieved either ‘good’ or ‘excellent’ ratings for the upcoming season. Both Nairn’s central beach and east beach have secured this top classification for 2026, joining other notable locations like Findhorn and Cullen Bay.

SEPA monitors water quality at 89 designated bathing waters each summer, from May 15 to September 15, in collaboration with local councils, Scottish Water, landowners, and community stakeholders. The assessment is based on a comprehensive four-year dataset, which tracks ongoing improvements and variations in water quality.

Dr. Ruth Stidson, Principal Scientist for Bathing Waters at SEPA, stated:

“Scotland’s bathing waters continue to perform well overall, with most achieving Good or Excellent status for the year ahead. The progress made over the past decade reflects significant investment and strong partnership working across the country.”

Highlighting the challenges ahead, Dr. Stidson emphasized the importance of ongoing regulation:

“With changing weather patterns and increasing pressures on drainage and wastewater systems, ongoing regulation is essential. We are committed to reducing pollution at source, protecting public health, and providing clear, accessible information for everyone who enjoys Scotland’s waters.”

This rating is not just an accolade; it ensures that visitors can safely enjoy Nairn Beach during the bustling summer months. The local community and tourists alike can take pride in this achievement, which underscores Scotland’s commitment to maintaining high environmental standards.

As the summer season approaches, beachgoers and water sports enthusiasts are encouraged to visit Nairn Beach, knowing they are swimming in some of the cleanest waters available. The SEPA’s ongoing monitoring efforts ensure continued transparency and safety for all who enjoy Scotland’s beautiful coastline.
