UPDATE: A 25-year-old man from Motherwell has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for choking his partner during a heated argument. This shocking incident occurred on August 18 and has raised urgent concerns about domestic violence.
The convict, Regan McIlmoyle, will face six months of supervision upon his release, as confirmed by the Hamilton Sheriff Court. The court heard the couple, who share two children and had been together for four years, had a disagreement early in the morning. At approximately 9:30 AM, the woman requested McIlmoyle to pack his bags and leave their home, triggering an explosive reaction.
Prosecutor Scott O’Connor detailed the events: “After the request, McIlmoyle went upstairs, claiming he would contact the SSPCA regarding their dog. When the woman suggested she could reach out to others about him, he stormed downstairs, grabbed her by the hair, and choked her, restricting her breathing for about five seconds.”
Police were alerted shortly after the incident, and officers observed visible signs of assault, including redness around the woman’s neck, as reported by LanarkshireLive.
Defence attorney John McLaughlin argued that the couple’s relationship had previously been strong but had frayed due to a “build-up of tension and frustration.” He noted McIlmoyle had been drinking the night before and was still under the influence at the time of the attack. “This was a momentary loss of control and temper,” McLaughlin said, emphasizing the relationship has now ended.
Sheriff Michael Higgins highlighted McIlmoyle’s troubling history, as he was already on a community payback order for a prior domestic assault when this latest incident occurred. As part of his sentence, an indefinite non-harassment order was imposed, prohibiting any contact between McIlmoyle and his ex-partner.
This case underscores the ongoing issue of domestic violence and the importance of support for victims. As the community grapples with these troubling revelations, it serves as a reminder of the need for continued awareness and action against such behavior.
