Speculation surrounding the potential risks posed by artificial intelligence (AI) has intensified following insights from experts regarding the timeline for the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). According to a report in The Guardian, advancements in AI may lead to scenarios where autonomous systems could surpass human intelligence, potentially culminating in significant societal changes by the early 2030s.
As AI technology continues to evolve, many researchers warn that systems may soon reach a point where they can autonomously code and improve themselves. This anticipated phase, sometimes referred to as an “intelligence explosion,” could lead to AI systems creating increasingly advanced versions of themselves. Some experts speculate that this development could pose existential risks, with predictions of a possible crisis by the year 2030 if unchecked progress continues.
Shifting Timelines and Expert Opinions
One of the prominent voices in this discussion is Daniel Kokotajlo, a former employee at OpenAI, who previously predicted that the breakthrough of fully autonomous coding could occur as soon as 2027. This idea gained traction online, attracting both supporters and skeptics, including US Vice President JD Vance, who acknowledged it during a May interview concerning the AI arms race.
Despite such predictions, not all experts share the same optimism regarding the imminent arrival of AGI. Gary Marcus, a professor of neuroscience at New York University, dismissed the notion of a rapid timeline as “pure science fiction mumbo jumbo.” His skepticism reflects a broader sentiment among researchers who have begun to extend their predictions for when AGI might be realized.
AI risk management expert Malcom Murray noted that timelines for AGI are being pushed further out as experts recognize the complexities involved in real-world applications of AI. He stated, “A lot of other people have been pushing their timelines further out in the past year, as they realise how jagged AI performance is.” Murray emphasized that for a scenario like AI 2027 to materialize, substantial practical skills would need to be developed in AI systems.
In light of these discussions, Kokotajlo and his colleagues have revised their estimates, projecting that the advent of superintelligence might occur around 2034. They continue to grapple with the uncertainty of whether and when AI could become a threat to humanity. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Kokotajlo remarked, “Things seem to be going somewhat slower than the AI 2027 scenario. Our timelines were longer than 2027 when we published and now they are a bit longer still.”

Leading AI companies are actively pursuing the development of advanced systems capable of conducting independent research. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has identified the creation of a mechanized AI researcher as an “internal goal” for his organization, with an expected completion date of March 2028. Altman also cautioned that there is a possibility of failing to achieve this ambitious objective.
Amid ongoing advancements, Andrea Castagna, an AI policy researcher based in Brussels, highlighted the complexities that current AGI timelines fail to address. She stated, “The fact that you have a super intelligent computer focused on military activity doesn’t mean you can integrate it into the strategic documents we have compiled for the last 20 years.” Castagna’s observations underscore the intricacies involved in aligning advanced AI systems with established frameworks.
