Croydon Youth Club Empowers Young Rappers with DJ AG’s Support

UPDATE: The Legacy Youth Zone in Croydon is making headlines today, fostering the next generation of rap artists with the support of TikTok sensation DJ AG and newly appointed Music Ambassador DJ Semtex. On February 21, 2023, the youth club hosted an event showcasing young talent, marking a significant moment for the borough’s music scene.

Just minutes from the famed BRIT School, Legacy Youth Zone is becoming a vital hub for aspiring musicians. DJ AG praised the extraordinary talent he witnessed during his visit, stating, “The talent is amazing, but more importantly, I love how respectful they are.” His commitment to nurturing young artists is clear, as he emphasized the importance of creating a supportive community.

The youth club, located in Thornton Heath, offers a safe space for individuals aged 8 to 19 (and up to 25 for those with additional needs) to explore their musical potential. With a state-of-the-art music studio, youth can write lyrics, produce beats, and record original tracks. This initiative is crucial as Croydon faces challenges, including recent cuts to youth services by Croydon Council.

DJ Semtex, a veteran of the UK hip hop scene, echoed AG’s sentiments, highlighting the urgency of providing educational resources to these burgeoning artists. “100 percent, it is just about how we help them. The starting point is giving them the education and getting them on the platforms,” Semtex said. His role, supported by Sony Music UK’s Social Justice Fund, aims to amplify the voices of these young creators.

The club’s influence stretches beyond music. Young people like Kyran, aged 17, expressed how the youth zone serves as a refuge from negative influences. “When I’m bored, instead of going outside, doing foolishness or going to a party, I come here. It gives me a breath of fresh air,” he shared, emphasizing the positive impact of the environment on his life.

Additionally, Lee, aged 14, noted how these spaces foster connections among peers. “It gets them together to make new friends,” he explained, underscoring the club’s role in building community.

Legacy’s Chief Executive Myke Catterall stressed the essential need for such services in Croydon, especially in light of the council’s recent youth provision loss. He stated, “We know there’s a need. We see stats around poverty, food poverty, and serious youth violence, and that is not all Croydon represents.” The youth zone provides a safe space for young individuals to access much-needed services and support.

As Croydon’s music scene continues to flourish, the collaboration between Legacy Youth Zone and music industry leaders promises to unlock new opportunities for local talent. The impact of these initiatives is palpable, as young artists prepare to take their place in the competitive world of music.
