BMW Tests Neue Klasse i3 Saloon in Arctic Conditions Ahead of March Launch

BMW has commenced winter testing of the upcoming Neue Klasse i3 electric saloon at its training centre in Arjeplog, Sweden. This marks a significant step as the vehicle approaches its design debut scheduled for March 18, 2024. The testing phase is part of BMW’s rigorous development process, aimed at refining the vehicle’s performance in challenging conditions.

Testing Environment and Vehicle Dynamics

Mike Reichelt, Head of the Neue Klasse division at BMW, emphasized the innovative spirit of the i3, stating, “The BMW i3 applies the sporty sedan’s typical characteristics to a completely new vehicle concept defined by the BMW 3 Series DNA.” He highlighted that the i3 pushes the boundaries of electric mobility, leveraging the unique capabilities of the new platform.

The i3 features an advanced driving dynamics unit known as the Heart of Joy, which serves as the central control unit within the Neue Klasse architecture. This system, alongside BMW’s proprietary Dynamic Performance Control software, efficiently manages critical functions such as the powertrain, steering, braking, and energy recuperation. The response times of this new system are reportedly ten times faster than previous models, enhancing overall vehicle performance.

Winter testing in Arjeplog is a BMW tradition, providing a unique environment with icy roads and extreme cold. The snow-laden surfaces and frozen lakes offer ideal conditions for assessing and fine-tuning the i3’s drive, suspension systems, and electronic controls. Despite the challenging environment, the “Heart of Joy” ensures agile and stable propulsion, allowing the i3 to maintain its characteristic light-footedness and driving comfort.

Performance Specifications and Future Availability

The BMW Neue Klasse i3 is projected to launch in the second half of 2026. It is anticipated to feature an impressive peak charging capacity of approximately 400 kW, alongside a maximum output of 469 bhp and 645 Nm of torque. These specifications reflect BMW’s commitment to combining performance with sustainability in their electric vehicle offerings.
