Erika Ishii, the voice behind Atsu in the acclaimed action-adventure game *Ghost of Yōtei*, delivered an impassioned message to the video game industry during her acceptance speech for the DICE Award for Outstanding Achievement in Character. Speaking at the awards ceremony, the 38-year-old genderfluid voice actor emphasized the urgent need for fair treatment and recognition of workers in the gaming sector, which has rapidly evolved into a leading force in global entertainment.
Ishii thanked her colleagues at Sucker Punch Productions, the developers behind *Ghost of Yōtei*, before addressing a critical issue that has long affected the industry. “I got into video games because I love video games, and because I wanted to tell the stories that I wanted to play,” they stated. As the gaming industry has become the most lucrative entertainment sector, generating $134.9 billion in global sales in 2018 alone, Ishii underscored that it is paramount for developers to receive equitable treatment.
The industry has faced significant challenges, particularly in recent years. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, global video game revenue surged by 20 percent, amplifying the financial success of major companies. Yet, this growth has been shadowed by mass layoffs, with an estimated 45,000 workers in the video game sector losing their jobs between 2022 and 2025. In 2025 alone, around 9,175 workers were laid off, according to data from GamesIndustry Biz. This number, while a reduction from the previous year’s staggering 15,631 layoffs, was still described as “horrendous” by featured editor Lewis Packwood.
Ishii pointed out that with increased popularity and revenue comes a greater responsibility for the industry’s giants to ensure fair treatment for their employees. “If you’re watching this, if you’re like me, please demand that the workers are treated fairly,” they urged. “Stories are more important now than ever. So please demand that the people who make them are treated well.”
The outlook for the gaming job market remains concerning. Amir Satvat, business development director at Tencent Games, predicted at least 7,500 layoffs in 2026, with a decrease in open roles across North America and Western Europe. The situation highlights a troubling trend within the industry, as developers continue to face instability.
According to the 2026 State of the Games Industry report, a significant majority of US-based game developers—approximately 82 percent—support unionizing to protect their rights. Yet, only 12 percent of those surveyed are currently part of a union. This disparity reveals a pressing need for collective action as the industry grapples with how to support its workforce.
Ishii’s poignant remarks serve as a reminder of the human element behind the booming gaming industry. As the voices and stories of the creators continue to shape the medium, the call for fair treatment and recognition of their contributions has never been more vital. The gaming community is encouraged to unite in advocating for its workers, ensuring that the industry not only thrives financially but also respects and values its most crucial asset: its people.
