A woman in New York experienced an unexpected surprise after adopting what she believed was a small chihuahua puppy. Madison Austin brought home the dog, named Henry, during the pandemic, drawn by his advertised weight of just four pounds. However, as weeks passed, it became clear that Henry was not the tiny companion she had envisioned.
Initial Excitement Turns into Surprise
Madison had spent considerable time researching “small apartment-friendly dogs” before choosing Henry. She said, “They advertised him as a four-pound male chihuahua. But from the moment we got him, we thought, ‘Hmm… his paws definitely look big.'” Despite her initial concerns, she and her husband believed Henry was at least part chihuahua. They even speculated about whether his ears would eventually stand upright.
Within a few weeks, Henry’s growth became undeniable. Madison observed, “He started gaining two or three pounds a week, and then it went up to five pounds a week.” Ultimately, a visit to the veterinarian confirmed their suspicions. “Sorry to break it to you,” the vet said, “but this dog is definitely not a chihuahua!”
Unexpected Expenses and Joyful Outcomes
The couple had invested in various puppy supplies under the assumption that Henry would remain small, including an expensive electronic pee pad that proved ineffective. Additionally, they found themselves spending significantly more on dog food than originally planned. Despite the unexpected challenges, Madison expressed gratitude for Henry’s presence in their lives.
As the family adjusted, they welcomed two children and relocated, and Henry flourished into a much larger dog. Now weighing approximately 95 pounds, his breed has been identified as a Labrador retriever. Madison reflected on their journey, stating, “We thought we wanted a small pup because of our lifestyle, but we are so happy he ended up being so big.” She emphasized the joy Henry brings to their family, saying, “He has a heart of gold. He was definitely meant to be ours.”
Madison frequently shares updates about Henry on her Instagram page, where followers have humorously pointed out the mismatch between Henry’s appearance and his advertised breed. One user quipped, “Girl, I mean this in the nicest way, but have you ever seen a chihuahua?” Another added, “Little Henry wasn’t even little. What were you thinking?”
Despite the initial misunderstanding, Madison’s story highlights the unexpected ways pets can enrich our lives, regardless of their size or breed. “Sometimes we don’t even know what we need in our lives until it finds us,” she concluded, affirming that she cannot imagine life without Henry as part of their family.
