Hundreds Set to Brave Cold in Birmingham’s Annual Big Sleepout

Hundreds of participants will sleep outside in Birmingham’s Millennium Point on November 28, 2023, to raise funds for the homeless charity St Basils. This annual event, known as the Big Sleepout, aims to generate vital financial support for young people facing homelessness across the West Midlands.

Having begun in 1990 as a modest fundraising initiative, the Big Sleepout has evolved into one of the UK’s most enduring charity events. Now celebrating its 35th year, it has successfully raised thousands of pounds to assist vulnerable individuals in securing safe accommodation and accessing essential services.

This year’s event promises a lively atmosphere. A brass band from the West Midlands Fire Service will perform popular Christmas tunes, while volunteers from Langar Aid will provide hot curry to help participants withstand the chilly temperatures.

Community Support and Innovations

The Big Sleepout will also feature the return of the popular Creative Cardboard Competition. Participants are invited to design makeshift shelters using donated cardboard, which will be supplied free of charge by Sandland Packaging in Bilston. This generous contribution will save St Basils thousands of pounds, facilitating their ongoing efforts to support the homeless community.

Mark Amyes, senior business development manager at Sandland Packaging, expressed pride in supporting St Basils, stating, “It’s such an important cause, especially with so many young people struggling to cope with rising living costs. For us, it’s about doing a good thing and helping others.”

Barrie Hodge, head of fundraising communication at St Basils, emphasized the event’s significance and community involvement. “The Big Sleepout continues to attract big numbers because of the generosity of the community,” he noted. “This year we want to make it bigger and brighter than ever and show young people they are not alone. A huge thank you to Sandland Packaging for their incredible support and to everyone who takes part, donates, or volunteers to help us raise the vital funds that make our work possible.”

St Basils’ Mission

St Basils focuses on assisting young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. The charity provides crucial support, including mental health services, and helps individuals find pathways to education, training, or employment. Each year, the organization aids over 4,000 young people, making a significant impact on their lives.

For those interested in joining this year’s Big Sleepout, registration is open, and participants are encouraged to sign up and contribute to a cause that profoundly affects the community.
