A prominent NHS GP and surgeon, Dr. Karan Rajan, has issued a health warning regarding the common habit of spending extended periods on the toilet. In a recent video shared on TikTok, Dr. Rajan highlighted the risks associated with sitting too long, emphasising the importance of adhering to a strict ten-minute rule to protect one’s health.
Dr. Rajan, author of the bestselling book This Book May Save Your Life, explained that while it may seem harmless to linger on the toilet, the practice can significantly increase pressure on the body. He noted that prolonged sitting can lead to various health complications, particularly concerning the rectum.
In his video, he described how sitting on the toilet can create an anatomical disadvantage. The design of toilet seats causes the rectum to hang lower than the rest of the body, which allows gravity to take effect. This results in blood pooling in the rectal veins, creating an environment conducive to complications such as haemorrhoids—often referred to as piles.
Dr. Rajan elaborated on the issue, stating that straining during bowel movements exacerbates this condition. He explained, “When you add in some straining and pushing, it leads to even more pressure, causing the veins to bulge, resulting in haemorrhoids.” He cautioned that these bulging blood vessels can lead to discomfort, including pain and itching, and may present with symptoms such as bright red blood after a bowel movement or a persistent sensation of needing to go.
According to the NHS, additional signs to watch for include mucus on toilet paper after wiping, lumps around the anus, and pain in that area. Dr. Rajan urged viewers to heed his advice about bathroom habits. He recommended only using the toilet when necessary, avoiding straining, and ensuring toilet visits do not exceed ten minutes.
For those experiencing worsening symptoms or no improvement after seven days of home treatment, Dr. Rajan advised consulting a GP. Specific indicators warranting immediate medical attention include a high fever, pus leaking from haemorrhoids, or significant, uncontrolled bleeding. In extreme cases, such as continuous bleeding or severe pain, individuals should contact emergency services.
By raising awareness of these common yet often overlooked health issues, Dr. Rajan aims to encourage better practices around toilet use, ultimately promoting overall well-being. Following the ten-minute rule may seem like a simple adjustment, but it could significantly impact one’s health.
