Shropshire Group Empowers Adults with Free Reading Support

A group in Shropshire is providing vital support to adults seeking to improve their reading skills through free, one-on-one coaching. Read Easy Telford and Shropshire East has been active since 2019, helping individuals gain confidence and independence in essential reading tasks, such as understanding letters, completing forms, and applying for jobs.

The organization’s approach focuses on creating a welcoming environment where adults can learn and develop their reading abilities. Sessions are held in local community venues, including libraries, and typically consist of two 30-minute sessions each week.

In a statement, a spokesman for the group highlighted the emotional impact of literacy, saying, “Imagine being able to share a bedtime story with your children and grandchildren for the very first time.” This sentiment underscores the program’s aim to not only teach reading but also to enhance family bonds and community connections.

Since its inception, Read Easy has successfully supported over 50 adults in East Shropshire, leading to 12 graduations where learners have completed the program. The group has identified that approximately 16 percent of the adult population in the area struggles with low literacy skills, and they are eager to assist those who reach out for help.

The initiative aligns with the UK government’s 2026 National Year of Reading campaign, which emphasizes the importance of reading within families. The group aims to address a critical question: what happens when a parent or caregiver faces challenges in reading? By providing support to adults, Read Easy not only improves individual literacy but also strengthens family life and creates opportunities for future generations.

In addition to its coaching programs, Read Easy is actively seeking to recruit Volunteer Reading Coaches and members for its management team, providing various options for individuals interested in contributing to this important cause.
