Highland Students Gain Valuable Experience at Inverness Castle

The newly established Inverness Castle Experience has provided secondary school students in the Highland region with an opportunity to acquire practical work experience in a distinctive environment. Launched in February 2024, this initiative welcomed eight pupils from various local schools for an immersive three-day programme aimed at offering real-world insights into the tourism sector.

Participating students hailed from several institutions, including Inverness Royal Academy, Millburn Academy, Dingwall Academy, Fortrose Academy, Charleston Academy, Nairn Academy, and Kilchuimen Academy. The programme specifically targets students in years S4 to S6, aiming to equip them with essential skills needed to thrive in a bustling visitor attraction.

During the three-day experience, students rotated through several vital departments such as visitor services, retail, and food and beverage. A spokesperson for the Inverness Castle Experience highlighted that this hands-on training is designed to enhance practical skills, including customer service, food service, barista training, stock control, and visitor guiding. Students also learned about the castle’s rooms and interpretation spaces, enriching their understanding of the historical context.

The initiative included sessions led by staff from High Life Highland (HLH), the organization overseeing the castle’s operations. Among the speakers was John West, the director of culture and learning at HLH, who stressed the importance of nurturing local talent. He remarked, “This initiative reflects The Inverness Castle Experience’s commitment to nurturing local talent, supporting young people into employment, and ensuring the flagship visitor attraction continues to be shaped by the community it serves.”

In addition to gaining practical experience, the students received an overview of HLH, which provided insights into potential career pathways within the heritage, tourism, and hospitality sectors. Staff members, including the CEO of HLH, shared their career journeys, offering valuable advice to the young participants.

At the conclusion of the programme, students will be encouraged to apply for positions within the Inverness Castle Experience, should they wish to pursue employment at the attraction. This support aims to facilitate a smoother transition into the workforce for these young individuals.

The redevelopment of the Inverness Castle Experience has been significantly supported by funding from both the Scottish and UK Governments, alongside contributions from The Highland Council and Highlands and Islands Enterprise. The Scottish Government invested £19.6 million in the castle’s transformation, while the UK Government contributed £7.5 million.

This initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to integrating local youth into the tourism industry, ensuring that the Inverness Castle Experience not only serves as a historical landmark but also as a platform for community engagement and professional development.
