Research from South Korea suggests that the spice turmeric could play a significant role in alleviating hangover symptoms. A study indicates that curcumin, a chemical compound found in turmeric, may help purge alcohol from the bloodstream, ultimately reducing discomfort such as headaches and nausea typically associated with hangovers.
The investigation involved 27 men and women who consumed a beverage known as Soju, which contains 16.5 percent alcohol. Participants were divided into two groups: one received curcumin supplements half an hour before drinking, while the other did not. Following the consumption of Soju, researchers measured blood and breath alcohol levels and administered symptom questionnaires over a period of 15 hours.
The results were notable. Those who took the curcumin supplements exhibited significantly lower blood alcohol levels and breath alcohol readings. Furthermore, 87 percent of the participants who took the curcumin tablets reported no hangover symptoms, in contrast to 68 percent of those who did not take the supplements.
Dr. Bo-Hyung Kim, a lead researcher in the study, explained that curcumin facilitates the rapid elimination of acetaldehyde, a substance produced by the liver during alcohol metabolism that contributes to hangover symptoms. He noted, “Curcumin also exerts antioxidant effects,” which may further enhance its benefits in this context.
While the study presents promising findings, it is crucial to note that the beneficial effects of curcumin are likely only obtainable through supplements. The body does not absorb sufficient amounts of curcumin from turmeric consumed in typical food servings.
