Local Nursery Children Discover Farming at Abbrook Farm

Children from HDC Nursery engaged in hands-on learning during visits to Abbrook Farm in Newton Abbot. This initiative allowed youngsters, ranging from a few months to preschool age, to swap their usual playtime activities for an immersive experience in agriculture. Over several trips, the children interacted with animals, explored fields, and learned about food production.

Abbrook Farm is operated by Teign School, which is part of the Education South West group. The partnership aims to enrich the educational experience of children by connecting them with local resources. During their visits, the nursery children had the opportunity to meet various animals, including geese and pigs. They also gained insights into how food is cultivated, fostering an appreciation for agriculture.

Valuable Community Partnerships

Lucie Wagner, head of school at Teign School, emphasized the importance of collaboration with local organizations like Abbrook Farm. She stated, “Working closely with local organisations like Abbrook Farm is so valuable. They allow us to provide unique learning experiences while strengthening relationships between the school, families, and local businesses.”

The initiative is designed not only for the nursery’s youngest attendees but also plans to involve older students. Specifically, students in Year 10 who are studying land-based subjects will support future nursery visits. This intergenerational approach aims to build connections between different age groups, enriching the learning experience for all involved.

Matthew Shanks, chief executive of Education South West, highlighted the significance of such partnerships in education. He remarked, “Partnerships like this bring education to life. By connecting nurseries with local resources such as Abbrook Farm, we provide children with meaningful experiences that develop both knowledge and a love for learning outside the classroom.”

This initiative not only promotes educational growth but also strengthens community ties, creating a collaborative environment that benefits both students and local businesses. As the program develops, it promises to enhance the agricultural knowledge of the children, paving the way for a future generation that appreciates the value of food production and farming.
