Five secondary schools in Ceredigion have launched a collection of new songs to celebrate Dydd Miwsig Cymru on February 13. This initiative is part of the ‘Cân yr Ysgol’ Project, which encourages students to collaborate with poets and the acclaimed musician Mei Gwynedd to create original music tailored to their individual schools.
The project prioritises student involvement, allowing them to brainstorm ideas, co-write lyrics, and participate in composing music. In addition, students formed school bands to perform their songs live and were heavily involved in the recording process. The resulting tracks are now available on various digital platforms, showcasing the creativity and talent of the young musicians.
Anwen Eleri Bowen, Welsh in Schools Promotion Officer for Ceredigion County Council, expressed the significance of this project, stating, “These experiences have been invaluable, building confidence, creativity and Welsh pride in our schools. We’re delighted to present you with this special album. We hope you’ll enjoy listening to these tracks as much as the crew have enjoyed being part of this musical journey.”
Cllr Wyn Thomas, Cabinet Member for Schools, Lifelong Learning, and Skills, highlighted the quality of the songs and the pride felt by the students. He remarked, “It’s worth listening to these brilliant songs not only on Dydd Miwsig Cymru but throughout the year. I am full of admiration for the talents of our pupils in composing, planning, performing, and releasing such quality songs in collaboration with those who supported them, and we take joy in their sense of pride for their community. Please listen to this special collection.”
The songs include:
– “Mae Bro Aberteifi,” written by Ceri Wyn Jones, performed by ‘Criw Cymreictod’ at Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi
– “Ymlaen Penweddig,” written by Arwel Rocet Jones, performed by ‘Criw Senedd’ at Ysgol Penweddig
– “Mynd a Dod,” written by Iwan Thomas and Year 9 pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron
– “Bro Pedr yn ein calon,” written by Dwynwen Lloyd Llywelyn, performed by ‘Criw Cymreictod’ at Ysgol Bro Pedr
– “Olion Traed,” written by Enfys Hatcher Davies and Year 9 pupils at Ysgol Henry Richard
The launch of these songs not only celebrates Welsh music but also fosters a sense of community and cultural pride among the students. As the tracks gain recognition, they highlight the creativity of young people in Ceredigion and the supportive environment fostered by local educators and musicians.
