Chef AJ Inspires Culinary Skills at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School

Students at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School received a unique opportunity to engage with the culinary arts during a recent visit from Alistair Turner, known as Chef AJ, on January 21, 2024. Chef AJ, the Commercial Director at Leith’s Education, showcased the practicalities of cooking, inspiring students to explore their culinary potential.

As the only school in Wales offering Leith’s Education courses, Haberdashers’ Monmouth is at the forefront of food education. Leith’s is recognized as one of the UK’s leading culinary education providers, offering accredited qualifications and programs for students aged five to eighteen. During the session, Chef AJ worked closely with Key Stage 5 students, guiding them in the preparation of chicken birria tacos. Participants honed various skills, including knife techniques, seasoning, and proper chicken preparation.

One student expressed enthusiasm about the experience, stating, “I want to do a gap year and be a chalet girl for a few months. Having the Leith’s qualification will help me because it is well recognized and will boost my confidence in the kitchen. It’s really nice to have Chef AJ here to watch us cook and inspire us.”

Chef AJ’s journey into the culinary world is particularly noteworthy. Originally pursuing a degree in architecture, he realized that it was not his passion. He subsequently enrolled in the Leith’s culinary diploma program in London, where he discovered a love for cooking. After five years as a chef at Rick Stein’s in Cornwall, he transitioned into education, becoming a food teacher and eventually the head of food at a school in Cornwall. His full-circle return to Leith’s Education allows him to share his expertise with aspiring chefs.

The initiative not only equips students with culinary skills but also opens doors to various career paths within the food industry. Whether students aspire to become food writers, private chefs, or yacht cooks, the knowledge gained from these classes is invaluable. Chef AJ’s visit exemplifies the strong connection between education and real-world application, empowering students to apply their skills in practical settings.

Overall, the workshop at Haberdashers’ Monmouth School represents a significant step in fostering culinary talent among students, encouraging them to pursue their interests in a supportive environment. As the culinary landscape continues to evolve, such educational experiences remain crucial in shaping the next generation of chefs.
